6. Onchyectomy - De-clawing

Onchyectomy: a surgical procedure known as de-clawing

This surgery involves the removal or amputation of, or part amputation of the distal phalanx or end bones of an animal's toes, so that claws cannot grow back. It would be like having the tips of your fingers & toes snipped off to prevent fingernails growing back.

The procedure is illegal in the U.K. & in many European countries where it is considered barbaric & cruel. Recovery is painful as the animals use their toes at all times & the resulting handicap hinders a felines natural behaviour. De-clawing is common in countries such as the U.S.A. although animal rights campaigners are trying to discourage the practise. Cats use their claws for grip & as tools in various tasks in their everyday natural behaviours.

If your cats scratches the furniture & you are looking to dissuade them please see: "Shredding Furniture"

If your cat lashes out or scrathes another member of their familly please see: "Cat Aggression"

If your cat kneads your lap in pleasure but the little needles are uncomfortable for you, place a towel over your lap (have one handy).

Your vet will clip a cats claws if you ask them to. You could do this yourself but remember there is a "Quick" within the thick of the claw containing nerve endings & blood vessels. Only the clear/transparent, sharp tip/point at very end of the nail/claw can be clipped away as it is nerve and blood vessel free.

Be aware that claws, just like like fingernails, will grow back & they are may grow back stronger than before.

Provide scratching posts or matts, these allow the cats to remove claw husks naturally & stretch their limbs & toes. The action will help to keep the tips of claws from becoming overly sharp.

(Some cats prefer to scratch horizontal matts instead of posts, a natural doormat such as sisal can be just fine for this)
